Story
The story revolves around JESSI NOLAN, a recently-widowed, 30-something voiceover actress who flees Los Angeles for a fresh start in Albuquerque. With her deceased husband's dog Max as her only companion, Jessi starts off her new life in the Duke City. But in an ironic nod to sitcoms of the sixties, Jessi makes the supernatural aquaintance of GABRIEL MOUNTBATTEN, a classic stage actor of the 1920s.
Not sure if Gabriel is a ghost or a figment of her imagination, Jessi nonetheless embarks on a tumultuous relationship with him as she tries to figure out her life.
Recurring Characters
JESSI NOLAN: A neurotic, hypersensitive voiceover actress who recently relocated to the Duke City.
GABRIEL MOUNTBATTEN: Gabriel was a celebrated silent film and stage actor of the 1920s who died while touring a play in Albuquerque in 1928. While alive, Gabriel was a notorious boozer and ladies man, but never found true love. We're not sure why his spirit never passed on to the hereafter, but it might have something to do with needing to have one last true romance. Gabriel is smart, debonaire, and mischievous. As a ghost, he can only reveal himself to one person at a time—and for some reason he's chosen Jessi.
KIP DEMEREST: Kip definitely lives in his own world. He's kind of a hustler, always working on various schemes to either make money or make it with the ladies. But he's got a good heart. He lives with his elderly parents (who we never see) in a house next door to Jessi. He runs a pest control business, but also has jumped on the film bandwagon in Albuquerque and is supposedly an agent. He's excited to have Jessi as a neighbor and potential client. He also has a bit of a crush on her.
CAPTAIN JAMIE TALIFERRO: Jessi's brother; an Air Force captain who tries to help his sister put her life back together. Jamie is the ultimate nice guy. He's very earnest and by-the-book, but not very imaginative. He loves his sister Jessi and really wants her to be happy—according to his definition of happy: steady job, steady relationship, strong family.
ELENA TALIFERRO: Jamie's wife; Jessi's sister-in-law. Elena is a stay-at-home mom with an attitude. She and Jamie have two kids: the twins Sa (short for Sam) and Lily, aged 7. Elena values her family life, but aspires for more. Although she understands what Jessi has been through and sympathizes a bit, she sees Jessi as kind of a drama queen (no pun intended) whose presence here in New Mexico is taking Jamie's time away from his family and career.
NATALIE MARSH: At the start of the series, Natalie owns a pet boutique store, but she really doesn't like pets and doesn't know what she's doing. When Jessi confronts Natalie about this in Episode 1, it gets Natalie thinking. In future episodes, she opens a chocolate store and hires Jessi. Natalie is a bit of a social butterfly—and knows a bunch of celebs and movers & shakers in town. She feels sorry for Jessi and tries to act as a mother figure to her.
